Marquise, 1993
Aluminum, glass and four photographs. Variable dimensions.
Marquises emerged from documentation made with 35 mm slides of the city of Porto. These images chronicle the small extensions made to housing units in Contumil, Pasteleira and in the ilha Boavista and ilha Lapa in 1993. These constructions are often illegal, homemade and almost always function as means of expanding existent living-space. Covered verandas have become a wide- spread, popular and typical architectonic detail in Portuguese cities and suburbs. The complete work comprises 36 photographs (the original images being the actual slides) and 5 sculptures.
